Biography

Prof. Tsung is a Chair Professor and Acting Dean of the Information Hub, Guangzhou Campus, at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He is also the Director of the Quality and Data Analytics Lab, and former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quality Technology (JQT). Based on his pioneering contribution to Quality Analytics research and education, he has been elected Academician of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ), Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), and Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). He received both his PhD and MSc in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and his BSc in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University. He worked for Ford Motor Company as a Quality Engineer and Rockwell International R&D as a Research Engineer. He completed his post-doctoral research with the Chrysler Corporation. During his tenure at HKUST, he has achieved an impressive academic record and strong international reputation.

Prof. Tsung has a proven record of academic leadership. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Quality Technology (JQT) from 2016-2018. Founded in 1969, JQT is the flagship journal of the American Society for Quality and is consistently ranked as one of the most cited journals in the areas of industrial engineering, management science, and statistics. Prof. Tsung has also been a Vice President (VP-Conference) of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) since 2018. He was Regional Vice President (Asia) of Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) in 2008. He was the Founding Vice Chair in 2007 and 2009 Chair of the Service Science Section, INFORMS. He was also the Chair of the Quality, Statistics, and Reliability (QSR) Section, INFORMS, in 2004. Additionally, he is the founding Chair of the Council of Chinese Industrial Engineering Department Heads (CIEDH) and has organized their annual forum for over a decade.

Prof. Tsung is also a dedicated educator. He is the recipient of the 2001 "Teaching Excellence Appreciation" Award in the School of Engineering, the EEM 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 Outstanding Teaching Award, and the recognition of Excellent Teaching Performance from the Dean of Business & Management in 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively. He established/facilitated several teaching and learning initiatives during his time as the department head, such as the Stanford-HKUST joint course on Global Manufacturing, a joint summer course on Design Thinking with the China Academy of Art (CAA), a Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Program for undergraduates and MSc, and set up one of the first online blended learning courses in the department on Quality Engineering in Spring 2015. He has also provided consulting services to a variety of organizations, such as Huawei, Philips LCD, ASTEC, ASAT, NXP, TPO, TechTronic Industries, Nortel Networks, China Mobile, Hayco, KinYat, New World Telecom, and International Bank of Asia. He is the first American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Six Sigma Black Belt in Greater China, and an ASQ Authorized Six Sigma Master Black Belt Trainer. Most of his MPhil/PhD students have stayed and become successful in jobs deeply related to their field of quality control research. Eight PhD students have become professors in top Universities in this region such as Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiaotong, Xi'an Jiaotong, Tianjin Univ., USTC, Univ. of Macau, etc. The others have become quality and data analytics professionals in the industry such as Philips, Home Depot, Alibaba, Huawei, etc.

In addition, Prof Tsung has a strong research record in the area of Quality and Data Analytics. He has received IIE Transactions' Best Paper Award three times, in 2004, 2009, and 2018, respectively. He was also the recipient of the Outstanding IIE Publication Award in 2010 - this award recognizes an outstanding publication in any IIE-sponsored or co-sponsored medium. He has acted as principal and co-principal investigator on over 20 Research Grant Council (RGC) funded research projects. He has been invited to provide over 50 invited lectures/seminars at different academic institutions and international conferences including World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting of the New Champions in 2014 and has served in editorial positions for 14 internationally respected journals. He is serving as Associate Editor of Technometrics, Journal of Quality Technology (JQT), and Quality and Reliability Engineering International (QREI). He has authored over 100 refereed journal publications in Technometrics, Management Science, JQT, IIE Transactions, IEEE Transactions, Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA), Annals of Statistics, Annals of Operations Research, etc.
